MEXICO CITY - BERLIN -
MEXICO CITY - BERLIN -
Throughout 2023 and beyond, LAGOS and MOMENTUM will initiate a series of exchanges between our institutions which enable the mobility and visibility of the artistic communities of Mexico City and Berlin, through the Artist-in-Residence Program in both cities. The participating artists will be jointly selected by a curatorial committee formed between LAGOS and MOMENTUM from bilateral research trips of the directors and curators of both organizations.
LAGOS is a non-profit organization that offers studios, residencies and exhibition spaces, both in Mexico City and Berlin, dedicated to the production and development of contemporary art projects, that aims to support artists and promote the intersection of art professionals. Positioned as both a local and global platform, MOMENTUM serves as a bridge joining professional art communities, irrespective of institutional and national borders.
LAGOS-Berlin will open its doors in 2023 at MOMENTUM's space in the Kunstquartier Bethanien in Kreuzberg to act as a studio and exhibition space for Artists-in-Residence, while MOMENTUM reorients its Artist-in-Residence Program to LAGOS-Mexico City. http://kunstquartier-bethanien.de/

In 2023 the governments of Mexico and Germany, through their respective Embassies, are planning a year of events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the partnership between Berlin and Mexico City as sister cities. In this framework, LAGOS and MOMENTUM are proud to initiate a long-term partnership with a specific focus on the exchange of contemporary art projects between the two cities.
Both institutions will organize a strong professional Studio Program consisting of artist talks, lectures, presentations, professional meetings, studio visits, as well as visits to galleries and museums, as an introduction to their respective artistic communities. At the end of the Residency the artists, depending on the results and in agreement with the program directors, will be able to make a presentation or an exhibition of the resulting research and production.
The main objective will be to foster a network of contacts between artists, curators, researchers, gallerists, museum directors and cultural promoters from both cities, with a parallel program of lectures, presentations, exhibitions, screenings, and performances.
Through the Artist-in-Residence program, it is our intention to start a bilateral exchange so that artists based in Mexico can go to Berlin, and artists based in Germany can travel to Mexico City to create and exhibit their work, as well as to participate in structured professional development programs.
Upon selection, it is understood that the work plan presented is the one that will be carried out. There may be changes as long as they are expressed and accepted by the LAGOS-MOMENTUM Committee.
This research and/or production program is aimed primarily for artists and curators, and it is also possible to apply for a collective.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Residency basic information
-
For the selection of the artists, the main aspects that will be taken into account by the LAGOS-MOMENTUM Committee are: the conceptual strength of the project, its feasibility during the residency period and its social/political relevance, as well as the artistic background.
Only online applications made through our platform will be valid. If you have any questions you can contact : info@artelagos.mx
After that, the LAGOS-MOMENTUM Committee will decide which artists are selected and confirm the selected artist by email.
The results of the selection are final and not subject to appeal.
-
The residency has a duration of 1 month, in which the artists will have to develop the proposed research or production project. If a project needs more time, it has to be justified and approved by the LAGOS-MOMENTUM Committee.
All the artists will have to provide their own funds for the residency costs, as well as transportation, accommodation, food and materials.
The actual cost of the residency is 2,700 euros per month. The Residency Fee includes studio space, curatorial and administrative support as per the list below. The Residency Fee does not include costs of travel, accommodation, production or materials, shipping, or insurance.
Artists can also apply for a grant of maximum 1,200 euros (if they justify properly why they need the support)
The acceptance for the residency doesn't mean the acceptance of the grant.
If the artist gets the grant, the cost would be 1,500 euros per month.
Individual artists and collectives (up to 3 artists per collective) can apply, keeping the same price.
